Olá from Portugal! This leg of Mike on the Move brought me to a place I’ve always dreamed of exploring—and let me tell you, it did not disappoint. I based myself in the gorgeous coastal town of Estoril , staying at the charming Hotel Inglaterra , which blends old-world elegance with a touch of modern luxury. It was the perfect home base for what turned into one unforgettable adventure.

Fun fact: Estoril isn’t just a pretty beach town—it’s got a touch of espionage history too. During World War II, it was a hotspot for spies and double agents, which helped inspire Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond. Fleming actually stayed in Estoril, and it's believed that his experiences here helped shape 007’s world of glamour and intrigue. The nearby Casino Estoril—one of the largest casinos in Europe—also served as inspiration for the casino scenes in Casino Royale. As a Bond fan, walking around Estoril felt like stepping onto the pages of a spy novel.

That first evening, I hit the ground running with a food and alcohol tasting tour through Lisbon . If you've never sipped Ginja (Portugal's famous cherry liquor) while munching on local tapas in the backstreets of the city, you’re missing out on a true Portuguese experience. The food was flavorful, the drinks were strong, and the stories behind every bite made it all come alive.

The next day I took a day trip to Sintra , and wow—talk about stepping into a fairytale. I wandered the opulent halls of Pena Palace , perched high above the town like a painted dream. But the real standout for me was Quinta da Regaleira . Twisting underground tunnels, moss-covered wells, and mysterious Masonic symbols—it was like walking through a Dan Brown novel.

From there, I spotted the ruins of a Moorish Castle dating back to the 900s , sitting stoically on a nearby mountain. Visitors aren’t allowed inside, but even from a distance, its presence was awe-inspiring. History in Portugal isn’t just something you read about—it looms right in front of you.

I also made my way to the medieval village of Óbidos and let me just say— wow . The entire village is wrapped in ancient stone walls, like it’s frozen in time. There’s even a centuries-old aqueduct running into town. Óbidos is also famous for its cherry liquor made by monks , and yes—I absolutely sampled some. For research, of course.

My journey then took me north to Nazaré , where legend meets miracle. According to local lore, a knight and Templar follower narrowly avoided falling off a cliff thanks to a divine intervention by the Virgin Mary. In gratitude, he built a tiny chapel and house to pray in , both of which still stand today. It’s a quiet but powerful place that really sticks with you.

And then there was Porto . Gothic architecture, cobblestone charm, and port wine that’ll knock your socks off. I toured several wine cellars and enjoyed every minute. Here’s something cool for the Harry Potter fans: J.K. Rowling lived in Porto in the early 1990s while working as an English teacher, and her time here heavily influenced her writing. You can see traces of Hogwarts in the city's stunning Livraria Lello bookstore—with its winding staircase and stained-glass ceiling—and in the black robes worn by local university students, which resemble the Hogwarts uniforms. Some of the architectural details around the city even made their way into the movies. As a fan, being here felt like walking through Rowling’s early inspiration.

But the grand finale? A Knights Templar tour that took me deep into Portugal’s hidden past. I visited two ancient castles , stood where warriors once stood, and explored a monastery that looked like something from a fantasy epic. After the Templars were disbanded, the remaining knights in Portugal secretly reorganized as the Order of Christ —a name that still echoes through the stone halls I walked.

We had an incredible guide who brought the entire era to life. Even with a bit of unexpected car trouble , this part of the trip was easily my favorite. The stories, the relics, the landscapes—it was everything I’d hoped for and more.

Portugal was fabulous, deeply affordable , and absolutely packed with culture, flavor, and wonder. Whether you’re after castles, coastline, or a glass of wine with a story behind it, put this destination on your list. You won’t regret it.

Islands, Stones, and Shadows: My Swedish Adventure

I’ve always believed the best kind of travel is the kind that leaves you a little breathless—surprised, inspired, and maybe even a bit haunted. My recent trip to Sweden delivered all of that and more. From ancient Viking history carved into stone to a surreal political speech from a sailboat, every moment felt like a story unfolding in real-time.

The journey began with a short layover in Iceland, and though it was brief, it was enough to give me and my traveling companions, my daughters Delainey and Rileigh along with their stepsister Kalyn, a taste of that windswept, alien world. Just walking outside the airport was an experience—cold, clean air, volcanic rock fields stretching in every direction, and that soft Arctic light that makes everything feel otherworldly. I grabbed a coffee in the terminal, looked out at the vast, mossy plains beyond the runway, and made a mental note: I need to come back here one day.

A few hours later, we touched down in Stockholm, and I was immediately struck by how the city manages to feel both deeply historic and effortlessly modern. Our base for the trip was the Hotel Nordic Light, a stylish, contemporary hotel with artistic lighting displays and warm Scandinavian design. What made it perfect, though, was its location—just a five-minute walk from Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s Old Town. That proximity made it easy to explore the heart of the city without ever needing a cab.

We wasted no time settling in. That first evening, as the sun dipped behind the rooftops, we joined a sunset ghost tour of Old Stockholm. Our guide, cloaked in black and wielding a lantern, took us down winding alleys and forgotten courtyards, spinning tales of plague doctors, public executions, and restless spirits. The cobblestones echoed under our feet, and the golden twilight gave everything an eerie glow. I remember standing in the very square where dozens were beheaded during the Stockholm Bloodbath and feeling a chill that had nothing to do with the breeze.

The next day, we returned to Old Town for a walking history tour that dove deep into the city’s darker past. This was Stockholm unfiltered—grisly murders, power struggles, betrayal, and torture chambers hidden behind otherwise quaint façades. We stood beneath the very windows where monarchs once watched enemies die in the streets. Our guide was blunt, brilliant, and deeply passionate about history. He didn’t sugarcoat anything, and I appreciated that.

After soaking up the city’s bloody past, we took a break from the urban landscape and drove about three hours into the Swedish countryside to see some of the country’s legendary Viking runestones. The drive itself was a treat—green fields, dense forests, and the occasional grazing moose. When we finally reached the stones, I was surprised by how unassuming they were. Some were nestled next to churches or tucked away in pastures, blending into the scenery. But up close, they were mesmerizing. Twisting serpent designs, Norse runes etched by hand over a thousand years ago—it was like reading messages from another time. I couldn’t help but imagine the people who carved them, what they were thinking, what they feared, and what they hoped would endure.

Back in Stockholm, one of the unexpected highlights was the underground city—or more specifically, the subway system, which doubles as the world’s longest art gallery. Every station felt like a different chapter in a surreal novel: cave-like walls painted with dreamlike murals, sculptures emerging from concrete, bursts of color and light in the most unexpected places. We made a point to enter every station we could just to see what artwork was waiting below. It transformed something as mundane as a metro ride into a daily adventure.

To experience the city from a different perspective, we boarded a boat tour that circled around Stockholm’s 14 islands. Gliding through calm waterways, we passed under arched bridges and alongside historic buildings, each with its own story. The contrast between land and sea, between old-world architecture and shimmering water, made Stockholm feel like it was floating between two centuries. There were moments in that boat, wind in my face, camera in hand, where I felt a rare kind of peace.

As if the trip hadn’t already offered enough, we decided to take a day trip to the towns of Sigtuna and Uppsala—two of Sweden’s oldest and most historically significant settlements. Sigtuna charmed me immediately. With its cobblestone streets, small cafés, and ancient ruins, it felt like stepping into a living museum. But it was in Uppsala that I experienced one of the most unexpected moments of the entire journey.

As we walked along the canal, we noticed a crowd gathering near the water. Curious, we joined them—and soon realized we were witnessing the President of Colombia giving a speech from a sailboat right there in the canal. The boat rocked gently as he spoke, his voice amplified over the water. It felt surreal, like watching history meet poetry. It was such a strange and beautiful moment—an international figure delivering a speech in a small Swedish town from the deck of a sailboat, surrounded by curious tourists and sleepy ducks.

When I look back on this trip, it feels like I squeezed a year’s worth of experience into just over a week. From ancient Viking stones to ghost stories at dusk, from underground art galleries to island-hopping by boat, Sweden was a nonstop blend of beauty, mystery, and history.

Was it a little expensive? Sure. Sweden isn’t cheap, and there were moments when the credit card winced. But honestly, every experience felt worth it. This wasn’t just a vacation—it was a journey into the past, present, and maybe even a bit of the supernatural. I came home tired, inspired, and already dreaming of going back.

For those who think this career involves sipping margaritas while casually booking flights to Bora Bora, let’s unpack the suitcase of reality. Spoiler: it’s over the baggage weight limit.

Morning Mayhem: The Early Bird Books the Seat

The day begins with coffee strong enough to wake a hibernating bear and a mental pep talk: You’ve got this. It’s just another Tuesday. But no amount of caffeine can prepare you for the tidal wave of emails, phone calls, and increasingly bizarre requests that hit you before 9 AM.

One client insists on flying first class to Europe for less than the cost of a Happy Meal.
“I found this fare on a blog from 2014,” they declare triumphantly.
“Ma’am, that fare expired before the last World Cup,” you explain, as politely as possible.

Another wants a hotel with "character" but no ghosts. (Fun fact: In Paris, that’s a hard no—those 300-year-old hotels have seen things.)
“Oh, and can I have a balcony that faces the Eiffel Tower but isn’t near any pigeons?” Sure. Let me just negotiate with nature for you.

Meanwhile, the phone rings incessantly. Every call is a new challenge wrapped in a riddle.

"Yes, I need a flight to Australia. But I don’t want to sit near anyone who coughs, snores, or wears flip-flops."

Iceland—land of fire and ice, a country where dramatic landscapes collide with unique culture. My first stop on this Arctic journey? The heart of it all: Reykjavik. Here’s how I spent my time during my first few days, and why this trip turned into an unforgettable adventure.

Checking In: Hotel Alda on Reykjavik's Shopping Street

Arriving in Reykjavik, I checked into Hotel Alda, a sleek boutique hotel right on Laugavegur, Reykjavik’s main shopping street. The location is ideal if you want to be in the heart of the action. After dropping my bags in a room that was modern yet cozy, I wandered downstairs to discover that the hotel had a sauna and an outdoor hot tub—a real treat when you're in need of relaxation after a day of sightseeing in the cold.

In the evenings, I found myself gravitating toward the hot tub, surrounded by the brisk air. Soaking in the warm water while staring up at the winter sky was a surreal experience. It was a perfect balance of comfort and Iceland’s raw nature.

Pubs and Dining: A Taste of Iceland

One of the highlights of Reykjavik was the pub scene. Just down the street from the hotel was a place called Bastard Brew & Food, a lively pub that quickly became my favorite spot. The Bastard had a great atmosphere, and it was the ideal place to mingle with locals and other travelers over a pint of craft beer. The vibe was casual and laid-back, making it an excellent hangout for evenings filled with laughter and conversation.

Every morning, Hotel Alda provided a fantastic breakfast spread. Iceland is big on seafood, and there was plenty of fish on the menu, even at breakfast. If you’re a fan of fresh, local ingredients, you’re in for a treat. Each morning, I fueled up with fish dishes, fresh bread, and strong Icelandic coffee—perfect to prepare for a day of exploring.

Exploring Reykjavik: Hop-On/Hop-Off and More

Reykjavik may be a small city, but it’s packed with character. One of the easiest ways to get a feel for the place is the Hop-On/Hop-Off bus tour. The tour is informative and gives you a great overview of the city's landmarks. I learned so much about Reykjavik’s history, from Viking lore to modern-day Icelandic culture.

Unfortunately, my highly anticipated Northern Lights tour was canceled due to cloudy skies—a risk you always run with those unpredictable Icelandic winters. However, that didn’t dampen my spirits, as there were plenty of other things to keep me occupied.

Must-See Attractions: Whale Museum & Volcano Show

During my stay, two experiences stood out: the Whales of Iceland Museum and the Iceland Volcano Show. At the Whale Museum, life-size models of these majestic creatures were on display, and I was blown away by the attention to detail. The museum dives deep into the importance of whales in Icelandic culture and the fragile balance of marine ecosystems. It’s a humbling reminder of the power and beauty of nature.

The Volcano Show was an equally jaw-dropping experience. This isn't your average museum exhibit. Here, they actually recreate real lava flows right in front of you! Walking through the halls, I could almost imagine the tension and hope that filled the air during those meetings.

Now, I had big plans to see more of Iceland’s natural wonders beyond the city limits—waterfalls, glaciers, and geysers. But here’s the catch: Iceland in the winter is cold—really cold. So, when the temperatures dipped even further, I did what any seasoned traveler would do: I adapted.

Instead of freezing my toes off chasing waterfalls, I spent my remaining time people-watching in the many pubs scattered throughout Reykjavik. Icelanders are an incredibly warm and friendly bunch, and sitting in a cozy pub, sipping on local beer while listening to their conversations (and sometimes joining in), made for some of my favorite memories of the trip.

Iceland is known for being an expensive destination, and that’s no exaggeration. Meals, drinks, and attractions all add up quickly. But when you weigh the cost against the experiences? Welcome to the first post of my new travel blog series, Mike on the Move: Discovering the World, One Mile at a Time. I’m kicking off my journey in the lively cities of Montreal and Quebec City, where history and modern life come together in an amazing mix of culture, architecture, and unforgettable experiences. I've been using Main Street Travel in Front Royal, Virginia for years, and they’ve never let me down. Their expertise has always guided me to the best spots, and this trip is no exception.

A Wonderful Stay at Chez Swan Hotel

My trip started in Montreal, where I checked into the Chez Swan Hotel. It’s this cool mix of old and new, designed by someone named Mary Moegenburg. Right when I walked in, the place felt lively and full of energy. The design is bright, rich, and a bit quirky—perfect for someone like me who likes a little privacy while being right in the middle of everything.

What really stood out to me was the attention to detail. Each room is decked out with furniture and decorations made by local artists, so every room has its own vibe. Plus, they have free Wi-Fi, unlimited calls to Canada and the U.S., and a 40-inch HD screen loaded with free movies. It was the perfect mix of comfort and creativity.

Sightseeing in Style: The Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tour

On the second day, I decided to check out Montreal on one of those double-decker buses—the hop-on hop-off tour. It was super convenient because I could explore the city at my own pace with stops all over the place.

I really liked having the freedom to explore. I ended up wandering through some of the quieter streets until I reached Dorchester Park. It’s got this cool Victorian-style fountain, and a couple of arched metal and wood footbridges, with old churches and impressive buildings all around. It was a great spot to relax before heading back to the hotel.

A Taste of France in Montreal

No trip to Montreal would be complete without diving into its amazing food scene. I had dinner at Le Pois Penche, a French restaurant connected to the Chez Swan Hotel, and it was fantastic. The steak was spot on, perfectly cooked, and full of classic French flavors. The cozy vibe of the restaurant, along with the great service, made it a night to remember

Exploring the Historic Charm of Old Quebec City

On the third day, I headed to Quebec City and joined a guided tour of the historic Upper and Lower Town areas. With a knowledgeable guide leading us, we visited some of the city’s top spots, like the Fortifications of Québec, the Citadelle, and the Notre-Dame-des-Victoires Church. It was like taking a trip back in time, from when the city was founded in 1608 to now, as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The guide made the tour both fun and educational, and I ended up learning a lot about Quebec City’s rich history, which gave me a new appreciation for the place.

A Scenic Escape to the Laurentian Mountains

On my last day in Montreal and Quebec City, I explored the stunning Laurentian Mountains, stopping at a few charming villages along the way. I visited St. Sauveur, Saint Adolphe d'Howard, where I checked out this really cool little blue church called St. Adolphe d’Howard Church, built back in 1914. The church is all wood, with a rectangular shape, white walls, and a tin roof as blue as the sky. The bell tower sits above the front, with arches, a spire, a cross, and even a rooster on top.

I also stopped by St. Agathe-des-Monts and visited the beautiful Vallée Bleue - Family Resort ski lodge. The scenery was incredible, and the locals were super friendly, making it a great way to wrap up my trip.

The Verdict: A Little Expensive, But Worth Every Penny

As my whirlwind trip came to an end, I couldn’t help but think back on all the amazing experiences I had in Montreal and Quebec City. Sure, the trip was a bit expensive, but honestly, it was worth every penny. From the artsy vibe of the Chez Swan Hotel to the rich history in Quebec City and the stunning beauty of the Laurentian Mountains, every moment reminded me why I love to travel.

The airline's new seat technology will make it easier for families to sit together

Airline customers throughout the United States have been complaining about seating issues when traveling with young children. Previously there has been an inability for families to choose seats when flying basic economy and it has been reported that kids as young as 1 year old have been seated apart from the adult travelers accompanying them with airlines charging additional fees to allow these families to sit next to each other. All that is now changing as United recently announced a new family seating policy that will allow children to sit next to their accompanying adults without charge on basic economy tickets.

This move comes after the Department of Transportation called on airlines to make this change in July. President Biden even spoke on this issue in his State of the Union Address and proposed a Junk Fee Prevention Act that would also target fees charged in other industries as well.

“Under intense scrutiny, United has now publicly acknowledged that family seating fees are a problem – something many other U.S. carriers deny. But the devil is in the details, and while United’s voluntary actions may prove helpful, they are not a replacement for government regulation,” William McGee, senior fellow for aviation and travel at the American Economic Liberties Project, said in a statement.

This new seat map technology will now find adjacent seats for families with children under 12 at initial booking, making preferred seating available if needed at no additional charge. When side by side seats are not available, travelers can choose another flight to their destination which has adjacent seating at no additional charge.

This is not a new issue. Federal law has required the airlines to seat children next to family members without additional charges since 2016 but enforcing this has been an problem as airlines have repeatedly dodged these requirements for years.

“As a father of seven, I understand this and have sat away from our kids on many flights,” United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby said in a recent interview. “We believe this will take a lot of stress out of the up-front process where you book a ticket—you know you’ll have a seat instead of having to wait to get to the airport and cross your fingers to hope you get a seat.”

This move makes United the first major carrier to make changes to its family seating policy.

CEO Josh Weinstein said in a statement. “We are in the business of delivering happiness, and Starlink makes it as easy as possible for our guests to share all their great moments and memories, giving them even more joy out of their cruise vacation.”

Staying connected with high speed satellite internet while on your cruise won’t be free and will not be included in your base fare. The prices will most likely vary by which ship you choose, destination and cruise length but to start, Carnival will offer three different internet packages:

Social Package: $8.50 per person per day, which allows you to text and check social media.

Value Package: $11.05 per person per day allows access to social media, email, and the web.

Premium Package: $14.45 per person per day allows access to the full internet including streaming.

This agreement with Starlink is a major step for these cruise lines in enhancing passenger experiences aboard their ships. On your next cruise you’ll be able to share everything you experience in real time, surf the web or just catchup on Netflix shows just like if you were at home. Passengers who prefer to completely disconnect will be able to opt-out by simply not buying the internet package.
